THE GAZE OF THE OTHER IS ALIENATING.

Aποκτούμε επίγνωση του εαυτού μας μόνο όταν ερχόμαστε αντιμέτωποι με το βλέμμα κάποιου άλλου, λένε οι υπαρξιστές. Αυτό το βλέμμα, για τον J.P. Sartre, αμέσως μας αντικειμενοποιεί και μας κάνει να αρνηθούμε την έμφυτη σε μας συνειδητότητα και ελευθερία.
Την ίδια στιγμή, αναγνωρίζουμε αυτές τις ποιότητες στο άτομο που μας κοιτά. Σε απάντηση σ'αυτό το βλέμμα θα υψώσουμε το ανάστημά μας ως ελεύθεροι και συνειδητοί άνθρωποι, και θα επιχειρήσουμε να αντικειμενοποιήσουμε το άτομο που αντικειμενοποιεί εμάς, αντιστρέφοντας έτσι τη σχέση.
Παρακολουθώντας κάποιον, κατά τη γνώμη μου, θέλουμε να προβάλουμε επάνω του ποιότητες που θέλουμε να δούμε στον ίδιο μας τον εαυτό. Αυτός που παρακολουθούμε είναι, με έναν τρόπο, ένας καθρέφτης: μια ανακλάστική επιφάνεια όπου μπορούμε να ρίξουμε μια κλεφτή ματιά σε αυτό που πραγματικά επιθυμούμε.
Το να αντισταθείς στο βλέμμα του άλλου, αυτό είναι η δοκιμασία.
Όπως διάβασα κάπου, "το να κοιτάς είναι μια θεμελιώδης ευχαρίστηση, είτε έχει προσκληθεί κανείς σε αυτήν είτε όχι.
Η ηδονοβλεψία έχει τη δική της αθωότητα".

We become aware of ourselves only when confronted with the gaze of the Other, according to the existentialists. This gaze, says J.P. Sartre, immediately objectifies us and makes us deny our consciousness and freedom inherent to us.
At the same time, we recognise these qualities on the person that looks at us. In response to that gaze we will assert ourselves as free and concious, and attempt to objectify the individual who is objectifying us, thus reversing the relationship.
Following someone, in my point of view, is closely related with projecting on them qualities that we want to see in ourselves. The person followed is, in a way, a mirror, a reflective surface where we can get a glimpse of what we're yearning for.To resist the gaze of the other; that is the test.
As I read somewhere, "looking is a fundamental pleasure, invited or not. Voyeurism has its own innocence".
